About Me

I started my nursing journey with University of Glamorgan (now USW) in sept 2006. After 4 years supporting adults with learning disabilities in their independence, I decided to develop into the adult nursing role. I was inspired by the nurses I worked with when one of my clients sadly deteriorate.

I was the first of my family to enter into higher education, in my youth this was not expected of people of our economic status. Entering into nursing education  as a mature student with responsibilities, and an extended break since being in education, was a daunting task. However, USW have always offered quality student support and I quickly developed skills and techniques to manage workload, both academic and practical.

Qualifying I joined the acute, critical care and theatre team with a local health board. Here I gained experience in day surgery ward care, pre assessment skills, 1st stage and 2nd stage recovery, uro-gynea theatre, emergency theatre, trauma theatre, as well as experience in general, ENT, MaxFax, vascular, ophthalmic and orthopaedic theatre. During C-19 I supported the ITU staff, before joining the nurse education team as a practice facilitator.

My role as a practice education facilitator saw me develop within education, in supporting nursing team to optimise the education experiences they offer to student nurses, advising and supporting development in the team and supporting student nurses when in practice.

This role lead to me developing into the lecturer role, first with Swansea University and now with USW. During this time I developed an interest in equality, inclusivity and diversity, I was the disabilities lead for the Swansea team, and I actively supported nursing teams in developing strategies for making reasonable adjustments.  I am a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and for the inclusion of diversity in healthcare education.

I have a particular interest in intersectionality, with a view to facilitating our future healthcare professionals to to develop the tools in order to best support the diversity within our communities.

I currently teach on the BSc Nursing (pre registration and PGDiP) and the PGCertEd
