David Baxter

About Me

David has over twenty years lecturing experience in Applied Mathematics and has

had involvement with the current undergraduate and postgraduate provisions at the

University of South Wales (formerly the University of Wales, Newport) since 2002.

David Baxter studied at Cardiff University gaining a BSc (Hons) and also thereafter

an MSc and his previous areas of research include the mathematical modelling of low

energy dynamic compaction and fluid dynamics. As part of his role as programme

leader he was previously responsible for developing relationships with partners within

the oil and gas sectors in the Middle Eastern Gulf States.

He is a Chartered Mathematician and a Fellow of The Institute of Mathematics and its

Applications, he is also a Chartered Scientist within the same professional institution

and has had industrial experience with multi-national organisations in both the

contracting and consultancy sectors.

Whilst in industry David worked as a consultant on projects which involved the

prediction and modelling of groundwater changes due to the construction of the

Cardiff Bay Barrage; thereafter he was also assigned to work on the design of the

redevelopment and improvement of Baltimore harbour in Maryland, USA – a project

undertaken in conjunction with Princeton University.

Responsibilities:-

Currently the programme leader for both Masters and Bachelors provisions within the

department and formerly (University of Wales) the International Academic

Programme Liaison Director for the Middle East.


External:-

Currently the external examiner for programmes delivered in both Engineering and

Mathematics at Liverpool John Moores University and at The University of Exeter.

Formerly external examiner for provisions at the Faculty of Science & Engineering at

Plymouth University.

External advisor for the validation of undergraduate degree programmes at Higher

Education Institutions in Malaysia (Asia Pacific University, Kuala Lumpur) and Sri

Lanka (Western College for Management and Technology, Mount Lavinia).

Facilitator in the the organisation and delivery of the USW degree partnerships in the

Asia Pacific region with Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Shanghai,

China.
